What is Smooth Gradation?

X-Reality™ PRO system maximizes gradation, by extending conventional 8-bit video to 14 bits. Because consumer televisions cannot handle this 14-bit signal directly, Sony applies Super Bit Mapping™ for Video (SBM-V) technology. Advanced digital error diffusion breaks up the solid bands of color, effectively smoothing out the gradation. The result is nearly the equivalent of 14-bit gradation in an 8-bit output signal. The television delivers amazingly graceful reproduction of faces, sunsets and other areas of subtle color gradation.
