About this download

This utility is only for use with the products identified and sold in Asia Pacific. Not all models are sold in all countries.

This utility upgrades the firmware to version M34.R.2135 and provides the following benefits:

  • Support the maintenance for “Spotify Connect”
  • Change default specification setting to enable “Chromecast built-in” playback from Standby Mode.
    Remark:
    • This update will be applied automatically on the unit when network is available due to changes on "Chromecast built-in" service.
    • If previous update was not applied, termination of photo playback will be applied on this update.

This firmware update also include previous update benefits and improvements:

Check the Current Firmware Version 

  1. Power on the TV and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Sound Bar is connected.
  2. Power on the Sound Bar.
  3. Press HOME on remote control and wait until you see the home screen.
  4. At the home screen, select Setup > System Settings with the arrow keys on the remote control. Then, press the ENTER key.
  5. Select System Information on the display with arrow keys on remote control and press the ENTER key.
  6. The firmware version currently installed on the Sound Bar is listed on the TV screen.

  7. If the last four digits of the version number is 2135 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware upgrade.

How To Get the Firmware upgrade

There are two ways to obtain the Sound Bar firmware upgrade:

Update via Internet: 

  • The Update via the Internet operation is straightforward. Sony recommends that you use the Update via the Internet method.
  • You need to connect the Sound Bar to the Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
  • Please see the Update via Internet Instructions section, for more information.

Update via USB Memory:

Update via Internet Instructions

The Update via the Internet operation is straightforward. It is highly recommended that you use the Update via the Internet method to upgrade the Sound Bar firmware.

Important Notes

  • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware upgrade is needed for your Sound Bar.
  • In order to use this upgrade method it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
    Note: If you cannot connect the system to your Internet source, please see the How To Get the Firmware upgrade section above for information about Update via USB Memory options.
  • In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible TV.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.
  • WARNING!! Please follow the upgrade instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the upgrade process and may cause the Sound Bar to be unresponsive or require repair.
  • WARNING!! Do not power off the Sound Bar or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware upgrade may cause the Sound Bar to be unresponsive or require repair.

Firmware upgrade Instructions
Note: The firmware upgrade process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.

  1. Power on the TV and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Sound Bar is connected.
  2. Connect the "LAN (100)" terminal on the system to the Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
  3. Power on the Sound Bar.
  4. Press HOME on remote control and wait until you see the home screen.
  5. At the home screen, select Setup > Software Update on the display with the arrow keys on the remote control and then press the ENTER key.
  6. Use arrow keys to select “Update via Internet”, then press the ENTER key.
  7. The message [A new software version has been found on the network. Do you want to update the software?] is displayed on the TV.
  8. Select OK with the remote control, and then press ENTER key. It takes approximately 5 minutes to start updating after the software has been downloaded. It takes approximately 5 minutes to start updating after the software has been downloaded.
  9. The message [Update to a new software version. Never turn off power while performing update. Current version M34.R.xxxx New version M34.R.2135] is displayed on the TV. Select “Start” and then press the ENTER key to proceed with software update.
  10. The message [Update Caution] is displayed on the TV. Select OK and then press the ENTER key on the remote to proceed with software update.
  11. During the update, UPDT message is flashing on the front panel display.
  12. When the message DONE appears on the front panel display, the update is completed. The receiver will restart automatically. Do not disconnect the power cord during the update process.
  13. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
    Note: If the last four digits of the version number is 2135, the firmware upgrade is successful.

Update via Internet FAQ

  1. The message [Update failed. Connect the USB memory containing the update files or connect to the network to retry. If the update fails again, please contact the customer service center] is displayed on the TV screen. 
    Please perform the following procedure:
    1. Check the following items.
      - The router and all devices connected to the Sound Bar. The router is switched on.
      - All the cables between the Sound Bar and the router are correctly connected.
      - Correct type of cable (straight or crossover) between the Sound Bar and the router is used.
    2. Select OK on the display with remote control and press the Enter key.
      If you cannot perform the network update, try the Update via USB memory Instructions.
      Please check Download the Firmware and save into USB memory and Update via USB memory Instructions for more information.
      If the issue persists after performing the upgrade, please contact our service centres
  2. When running Update via Internet, the TV displays the message [Connection status cannot be confirmed cannot communicate with the server. Please try again later.] and you cannot perform the firmware upgrade. 
    There may be a problem with the network connection. Verify that the network connection and settings are correct as following
    1. Check the Ethernet cable to make sure it is securely connected to the "LAN (100)" terminal on the unit and to the Internet source.
    2. Check the Sound Bar has its own IP address on the network settings.
    Note: If you use a proxy server, enter the IP address of the proxy server, instead of the proxy host name, in the "Proxy Server" input field.
    3. Follow the Update via Internet Instructions again.
  3. The power is shut down during the upgrade process.
    Power on the Sound Bar, and then follow the Update via Internet Instructions again.
  4. After the Update via the Internet process has started, the message [Download capacity: xxxxxxKB/xxxxxKB and xx% is display in TV screen] is displayed but the progress bar on the display is not updated.
    Depending on your network circumstances, the update via the Internet process can take a long time (up to 60 minutes).
    That is reason the message [Download capacity: xxxxxxKB/xxxxxKB and xx% is display in TV screen] is displayed and the progress bar on the display is same for a long time.
  5. The update via the Internet has been going for over 60 minutes and has not finished. 
    Connect Sound Bar to the network with a cable (instead of Sound Bar connects to network via wireless) and try the update via the Internet procedure again.
    If the problem continues, the network transmission speed may be low. In that case please try the Update via USB memory Instructions.

    If the symptom does not improve after re-upgrade, please contact our service centres
  6. The message [This device is not connected to network. Perform network diagnostics in the connection server setting.] is displayed on TV screen.
    Please check whether the LAN cable is connected to the Sound Bar.
  7. The message [Already Updated] is displayed on the TV screen if the firmware of Sound Bar.
    The firmware version that currently installed on the Sound Bar is the latest version.

Details

Download the Firmware and save into USB memory
If you cannot connect the Sound Bar to your Internet source, please use Update via USB Memory method.
Important Notes

  • Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware upgrade:
    Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7, or Windows Vista is recommended.
  • In order to perform the firmware upgrade, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible TV.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download and save into USB memory Instructions

  1. Download the UPDATE_M34R2135.zip file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATE_M34R2135.zip file is 222,522,404 bytes.
    a. Right-click the UPDATE_M34R2135.zip file, and click "Properties".
    b. On the "UPDATE_M34R2135.zip Properties" screen, verify that the "Size:" listed is "212 MB (222,522,404 bytes)".
    Note: The "Size on disk:" listed may be different. That is normal.
    c. If the file size is different than the "212 MB", please download the UPDATE_M34R2135.zip file again.
  3. Extract the update file from the UPDATE_M34R2135.zip file.
    • For Mac OS X operating system:
      •  Go to the location where the file was downloaded and double-click the UPDATE_M34R2135.zip file.
      • A new folder will be created called "UPDATE".
    • For Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8 / 8.1 or Windows 10 operating system:
      • Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the UPDATE_M34R2135.zip file, and then click "Extract All".

        Note: For Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10, the default settings for Internet Explorer will save the file in the Downloads folder. To locate the Downloads folder, click the "Desktop" tile from the Start screen and then locate the downloaded file using Windows Explorer.
      • At the "Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders" window, click Extract.
      • A new folder will be created called UPDATE.
  4. Note: Four files will be extracted: MSB34-FW.BIN and MSB34-FW.ID, MSB34-FW_MB.BIN, and MSB34FW_MB.ID

  5. Connect a compatible USB storage device to your computer.
  6. Transfer the UPDATE folder to the USB storage device:
    • For Mac OS X Operating System:
      • Drag and drop UPDATE folder to the root folder of the USB device.
    • For Windows Operating System:
      • Go to the directory where the folder was created, and then right-click the UPDATE folder.
      • From the menu, click Send To..., and then click the drive where your USB drive is located.
      • The update folder will be copied onto your USB device.
  7. Note: The update will not be performed if the folder is not copied to the root directory of the USB device or if the name of the folder is modified.

  8. After copying the UPDATE folder, remove the USB device from your computer.
  9. Please continue to the next section.

Version Upgrade Instructions
The instructions below are for how to install the firmware upgrade using USB Memory.

Firmware upgrade Instructions
WARNING!! Do not power off the system or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.
WARNING!! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the upgrade is complete. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.
Note: The firmware upgrade process takes about 5 to 15 minutes.

  1. Power on the TV and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Sound Bar is connected.
  2. Power on the Sound Bar.
  3. Press HOME on remote control and wait until you see the home screen.
  4. Insert USB that contain the 4 image files.
  5. At the home screen, select Setup > Software Update with the arrow keys on the remote control and then press theENTER key.
  6. Select “Update via USB Memory” with arrow keys on remote control, and then press the ENTER key.
  7. The message [Update files found in the USB memory. Do you want to update the software? Current version M34.R.xxxx New version M34.R.2135. Do not turn off the power or remove the USB memory during the update.] is displayed on the TV.
  8. Select OK using the remote control, and then press the ENTER key on remote control.
  9. The message [Update Caution] is displayed on the TV. Select OK on display and then press the ENTER on remote control to proceed with software update.
  10. The update starts.
  11. During the update, the UPDT message is flashing on the front panel display.
  12. When the message DONE appears on the front panel display and, the update is completed. The receiver will restart automatically. Do not disconnect the power cord during the update process.
  13. Check the firmware version. If the version number is M34.R.2135, the firmware update is successful.

Check the Current Firmware Version

  1. Power on the TV and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Sound Bar is connected.
  2. Power on the Sound Bar.
  3. Press HOME on the remote control and wait until you see the home screen.
  4. At the home screen, highlight Setup > System Settings then select ENTER with the arrow keys on the remote control.
  5. Highlight System Information and press ENTER.

The firmware version currently installed on the Sound Bar will be listed on the TV screen.

Update via USB Memory FAQ

  1. UPDT and ERROR is displayed on the front panel display. 
    Please perform the following procedure:
    1. Disconnect the AC cord, then plug the AC cord again.
    2. Power on the Sound Bar.
    3. Follow the Update via USB memory Instructions again.
    If the issue persists after performing the upgrade again, please contact our service centres
  2. The power was shut down during the upgrade process. 
    Power on the Sound Bar, and then follow the Update via USB memory Instructions again.
  3. When I double click on the UPDATE_M34R2135.zip upgrade file I downloaded from the upgrade web site cannot be extracted.
    The download may fail. Delete the downloaded file and follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and save into USB memory section to create a new upgrade disc
  4. The firmware upgrade process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.
    Please contact our service centres
