This utility is only for use with the products identified and sold in Asia Pacific. Not all models are sold in all countries.
This utility updates BDP-S4500/S5500 firmware to version M25.R.0221 and provides the following benefits:

  • Improve the stability of network services.
Benefits provided from previous updates includes:
  • Connectivity Improvement of network services.
  • Improves the playability of data videos.
  • Fixed Playback Issue for specific FLAC files.

Check the Current Firmware Version

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  3. If the player starts to play a disc, press the STOP button and wait until the Home Screen is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  4. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup – System Settings, and then press the ENTER button.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select System Information and then press the ENTER button.
  6. The firmware version currently installed on the Blu-ray Disc player will be listed on the television screen.
    If the last four digits of the version number are 0221 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware update.

How To Get the Firmware update
There are two ways to perform the BDP-S4500/S5500 Firmware update:

Update via Internet:

  • The Update via Internet operation is straightforward. Sony highly recommends that you use the Update via Internet method.
  • You will need to connect the Blu-ray Disc player to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable or Wireless connection.
  • It is recommended to have network speed above than 512Kbps to use Update via Internet to avoid slow firmware update process.
  • Please see the Update via Internet Instructions section, for more information.

Update via USB Memory:

Update via Internet Instructions
The Update via Internet operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network Update method to update the BDP-S4500/S5500 firmware.

Important Notes

  • WARNING!! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • WARNING!! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • In order to use this update method it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
  • In order to perform the firmware update, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.

Update via Internet Instructions
Note: The firmware update process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
  2. Make sure the Blu-ray player is connected to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable or wireless router.
  3. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  4. If there is a disc in the Blu-ray Disc player, please remove the disc.
  5. At the Home Screen menu , use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup -Software Update and then then select Update via Internet.
  6. New Software Version available message will be prompted. Select OK to proceed for Update via Internet.
  7. The message Update to a new software version is displayed, and the latest software version is displayed on the television.
  8. Select Start and then press the ENTER button.
  9. The first portion of the update process starts.
  10. During the update, the progress bar, showing x % and the download capacity, are displayed on the television.
    Note: The x changes to 0 through 100, indicating the update progress.
  11. The Blu-ray Disc player will restart itself when it is complete and the second portion of the update will start.

  13. Once the firmware update is complete, it will power off and power back on automatically.
    WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the player until the update is complete. Doing so may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  14. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the update has successfully installed.
    Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0221, the firmware update was successful.

Update via Internet FAQ

  1. When running network update, the television displays the message, Connection status cannot be confirmed or This device is not connected to network and you cannot perform the firmware update.
    There may be a problem with the network connection. Verify that the network connection and settings are correct.
    1. For wired connection, check the Ethernet cable to make sure it is securely connected to the LAN (100) terminal on the unit and to the Internet source.
    2. Or for wireless connection, check the wireless router is powered on and connected to Internet source.
    3. Check the Blu-ray Disc player network settings and confirm that the player has its own IP address.
    Note: If you use a proxy server, enter the IP address of the proxy server you use, instead of the proxy host name, in the Proxy Server input field.
    4. Confirm both Physical Connection and Internet Access is OK in Network Settings - Network Connection Status
    5. Follow the Update via Internet instructions again.
  2. The power was shut down during the update process.
    Power on the Blu-ray Disc player and try the network update process again.
  3. The firmware update process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes
    The recommended network speed to perform Update via Internet is 512Kbps and above.
    If firmware update process is still not finished, please cancel the process and retry with Update via USB Memory. If firmware update still failed, please contact Sony.
  4. While updating the firmware, Update failed screen appears.
    Please perform the following procedure:
    1. Ensure there is no problem with your network connection to the Internet.
    2. At the update failed screen, select OK to try the network update again or select
    Cancel to cancel the network update process.
    3. If the symptom does not improve after trying the Update via Internet again, please
    download the firmware from the web and Update via USB Memory.
    4. Cancel the Update via Internet process and proceed with Update via USB Memory.
  5. The firmware update continues to fail after multiple tries.
    Please download the firmware from the web and performed Update via USB memory.
    If the problem still persists, please contact Sony.

Download for Update via USB Memory Instructions
If you cannot connect the BDP-S4500/S5500 to your Internet source, please use the update via USB method.

Important Notes:

  • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware update is needed for your Blu-ray Disc player.
  • WARNING!! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair
  • WARNING!! Do not power off the Blu-ray Disc player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the Blu-ray Disc player to be unresponsive or to require repair.
  • Recommended operating system for the computer that will download the firmware update:
    • Macintosh OS version 10.5 or later version
    • Microsoft Windows 10, Windows 8.1,Windows 8, Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP
  • In order to perform the firmware update, it is necessary to have the player correctly connected to a compatible television.
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download for Update via USB Memory Instructions

  1. Download the UPDATE_M25R0221.ZIP file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATE_M25R0221.ZIP file is 130,359,793 bytes.
    a. Right-click theUPDATE_M25R0221.ZIP file, and click Properties.
    b. On the UPDATE_M25R0221.ZIP Properties screen, verify that the Size: listed is 124 MB (130,359,793 bytes).
    Note: The Size on disk: listed may be different. That is normal.
    c. If the file size is different than the 130,359,793 bytes, please download the UPDATE_M25R0221.ZIP file again.
  3. Extract the update file from the UPDATE_M25R0221.ZIP file.
  • For Mac OS X operating system:
    a. Go to the location where the file was downloaded and double-click the UPDATE_M25R0221.ZIP file.
    b. A new folder will be created called "UPDATE "
  • For Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 operating system:
    a. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the UPDATE_M25R0221.ZIP file, and then click Extract All
    b. At the Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders window, click Extract
    c. A new folder will be created called UPDATE
  • For Windows XP operating system:
    a. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the UPDATE_M25R0221.ZIP file, and then click Extract All
    b. At the Extraction Wizard dialog box, click Next.
    c. Click Next.
    d. Click Finish.
    e. A new folder will be created called UPDATE

    Note: Make sure all four files is included inside UPDATE folder: 
    MSB25FW.BIN and MSB25-FW.ID, MSB25-FW_MB.BIN, and MSB25-FW_MB.ID
  1. Connect a compatible USB storage device to your computer.
    View formatting instructions and the list of compatible USB storage devices
    Note: BDP support FAT32 and NTFS
  2. Transfer the update folder to the USB storage device:
  • For Mac OS X operating system:
    a. Drag and drop UPDATE folder to the root folder of the USB device.
  • For Windows operating system:
    a. Go to the directory where the folder was created
    b. Right-click the UPDATE folder and, from the menu
    c. Click "Send To...", and then click the drive (Example: Removable Disk E:) that represents your USB device.
    d. The update folder will be copied onto your USB device.

    Note: The update will not be performed if the file is not copied to the root directory of the USB device or if the name of the file is modified.
  1. Remove the USB device from your computer.
  2. Please continue to the next section.

Update via USB Instructions
The instructions below are for how to install the firmware update using a USB device.

Firmware update Instructions

  • WARNING!! Do not power off the player or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the player to the point of requiring repair.
  • WARNING!! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the update is complete. Doing so may damage the player to the point of requiring repair.
    Note:The firmware update process takes up to 5 minutes to complete. During the update process, the screen on your television will display progress information, or may be blank. This is normal. 
  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the Blu-ray Disc player is connected.
  2. Power on the Blu-ray Disc player.
  3. Make sure no other USB devices are connected to Blu-ray Disc player, if there are, please unplug it from Blu-ray Disc Player.
  4. Insert the USB storage device containing the update file into USB port located on the front panel of the player.
  5. At the Home Screen menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select Setup - Software Update and then press the ENTER button.
  6. Software Update confirmation will be displayed. Select Update via USB Memory. Press OK to perform Update via USB Memory.
  7. The message Update to a new software version is prompted and the latest software version is displayed on the television
  8. Select OK and then press the ENTER button
  9. The first portion of the update process starts.
  10. During the update the progress bar “x %” is displayed on the television.
    Note: The “x” changes to “0” through “100”, indicating the update progress
  11. The Blu-ray Disc player will restart itself when the first portion has completed and the second portion of the update will start.
  12. The progress bar "x %" is displayed again on the television.

  13. Once the firmware update is complete, the player will power off and power back on automatically.
    WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the player until the update is complete. Doing so may result in your player being unresponsive and requiring repair.
  14. Remove the USB device from the player.
  15. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the update has successfully installed.
    Note: If the last four digits of the version number are 0221, the firmware update was successful.

Update via USB Memory FAQ

  1. Unable to select “Update via USB Memory”.
    Please make sure following:-
    -USB device is properly connected to Blu-ray Disc player.
    -USB device is formatted to supported File System (FAT32 & NTFS).
    -USB devices is compatible with Blu-ray Disc player.
    If the problem continues, please contact Sony.
  2. Caution message “There is no update file” is displayed.
    Please make sure the update folder name is correctly named (UPDATE – with all capital letter) and all the files are included inside UPDATE folder:-
    -MSBXX-FW.BIN
    -MSBXX-FW.ID
    -MSBXX-FW_MB.BIN
    -MSBXX-FW_MB.ID
    Please follow the steps in the Download and Transfer the Update File to your USB Storage Device section.
    If the problem continues, please contact Sony.
  3. Caution message “The file is corrupted” is displayed.
    Please download the UPDATE_M25R0221.ZIP again and follow the steps in the Download and Transfer the Update File to your USB Storage Device section.
    If the problem continues, please contact Sony
  4. The power was shut down during the update process.
    Power on the Blu-ray Disc player and try the update process again.
  5. The UPDATE_M25R0221.ZIP update file I downloaded from the update web site cannot be extracted.
    The download may have failed. Delete the downloaded file and follow the steps in the Download and Transfer the Update File to your USB Storage Device section.
  6. The firmware update process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes.
